Simply put beer is an alcoholic beverage made with barley, hops, yeast and water. While other additions like wheat, fruit and spices can also be used, it’s these four ingredients that are the heart and soul of beer.
Malt (most commonly barley) is used to produce flavour and colour in a beer. The darker the malt, the darker the beer.
Hops is used to provide aroma and bitterness in a beer. Depending on the variety you can produce aromas and flavours like pine, grass, grapefruit or orange/
Yeast is used to add flavours and aromas as well as converts the sugar from the malt into alcohol.
Water is used throughout the process of brewing. Depending on the mineral content and quality of your water the taste of the beer can change.
