Flanders Red

Flanders Red

Found in the West Flanders region of Belgium, these complex sour beers are aged at least two years in oak barrels. These wooden vessels contain microbes like brettanomyces, lactobacillus and acetobacter. Often the beer is then blended with fresher beer to help balance acidity.

 

Colour– copper to dark reddish brown

Aroma– plum, orange, black cherry, red current, vanilla, red wine vinegar, fig, prunes, oak

Flavour– plum, orange, black cherry, red current, vanilla, red wine vinegar, fig, prunes, oak

Mouthfeel– tart, mouth pucking, acidic

Finish– dry, wine like

ABV– 4.6-6.5%

Cheese Pairing– bleu, camembert, aged cheddar

Food Pairing– duck, ribs, spicy greens, smoked salmon, shellfish

Dessert Pairing– Plum pudding, chocolate cake, red berry desserts
